Monday, the North Carolina Tar Heels, ranked No. 5 overall by D1Baseaball, took down the East Carolina Pirates 6-3.
It wasn’t just the offensive production that stood out for the Tar Heels, their pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts on the evening, led by starter Aidan Haugh.
Haugh, who is a senior, worked five strong innings, allowing only two runs on four hits and managed to strikeout 10 batters along the way.
Hitting the double digit Ks was a career high for Haugh as well. Prior to Monday night, his previous best was last April against South Carolina in a midweek matchup, where he worked just four innings as Monty Taylor of College Baseball Central stated.
Matthew Matthijs worked 2.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits, striking out six and not allowing a walk for the Tar Heels.
Also getting some action out of the bullpen was Cameron Seagraves who worked 1.1 innings and did not allow a run to score on two hits and a strikeout.
UNC’s first baseman Hunter Stokely led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with a home run and an RBI. It was his first long ball of the season.
North Carolina will play VCU for a midweek contest on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm.
