On a Friday afternoon from Globe Life Field, it was the depth of the Oklahoma State lineup that shined. From the first pitch Oklahoma State was on the attack against a pesky Michigan team, While the first inning was a scoreless afair, the first 3 Pokes all hit the ball on the button. Nolan Schubart had the long home run about 15 rows up in the deepest part of the ballpark. A no doubter in every sense of the word, it catapulted the Pokes offense. A big 6th inning was all the Pokes would need as they took game 1 9-3.
Sam Garcia was tremendous for the Pokes going 5.1 allowing only the 1 run on three hits. That was the big question mark coming into the season, how would the Pokes starting pitching hold up. Two games in, Sam Garcia has exceeded expectations. “We thought his numbers didnt tell the whole story” Josh Holliday. “We talked to our coaches and his coaches at the Cape, his numbers didnt tell his whole story” Garcia did a tremendous job of mixing all his pitches and keeping the Michigan batters off balance. Of the three hits only Hrustich seemed to find a barrel.
For Michigan, they hung around the game early before the Pokes got into the bullpen. Voit was good the first time through the order and did a tremendous job of throwing all three pitches. He did tire late and struggled to put away the Cowboys at times. He threw 88 pitches.
Looking ahead Michigan will face Oregon State in the early game, while Oklahoma State draws the Hogs in the late game. This is the third year the Pokes and Hogs have linked up, and the second time in Arlington.
