No. 24 WVU winning streak reaches a dozen

No. 24 West Virginia Mountaineers extended its winning streak to a full dozen on Thursday night with a 3-2 win over Cincinnati.

Although Griffin Kirn allowed two earned runs, he was impressive in the 5.2 innings of work. Kirn struck out six batters and only allowed one free pass. He faced 24 batters and threw 91 pitches.

Chase Meyer, who came in out of relief for the Mountaineers, earned his seventh win of year after working 3.1 innings. Meyer struck out five, walked two and did not allow a run on the single hit he allowed. He faced 12 batters and threw 43 pitches.

As for the offense it was rallied behind the bat of Jace Rinehart — like it has been all season — as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He was the sole production at the plate for the Mountaineers.

Cincinnati’s Kerrington Cross — who was highlighted in my game preview this week — went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. Cross entered the game as one of the top players on the Big 12 in batting production by getting on base.

West Virginia and Cincinnati play game two of the three-game series Friday night as WVU looks to extend its winning streak to 13. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm EDT.
