The West Virginia Mountaineers started the 2025 season off hot, with a 4-0 lead over the first two innings in their 4-2 win over Jacksonville on Friday night.
Logan Sauve, who was rated as one of the best Big 12 backstops, ripped the first pitch he saw to left field for a single. Kyle West plated Sauve from third base on a RBI groundout, which was promptly followed by a Michael Perazza sac-fly RBI to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead going in the bottom half of the first.
In the second inning, West Virginia kept it rolling with two more runs scored off the bats of Armani Guzman and Sauve, for Guzman, his first career RBI for the Mountaineers.
Transfer pitcher Griffin Kirn was stellar in his WVU debut. The southpaw worked 5.2 innings while allowing just 1 run and striking out 5 on 78 pitches thrown. He did give up three free passes on the night.
There was no radar gun for the game, but the ESPN+ announcers were quoted to say “his fastball has life to it.”
The senior starter had an impressive three innings where he retired all three hitters to come to the plate in each inning.
Kirn did have some help from his defense, primarily coming in the way of a diving catch from Guzman in right field.
Kirn recorded his first win as a Mountaineer and new head coach Steve Sabins picked up his first career win as a head coach.
