Georgia Tech Names Ramsey Head Coach

James Ramsey was named the 13th head coach in Georgia Tech baseball program history on Thursday morning. Ramsey has served as the team’s hitting coach since 2019 and has been serving as the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator since 2021.

Ramsey succeeds the legendary Danny Hall, who spent the last 32 years at the helm in Atlanta and took Georgia Tech to Omaha for the College World Series three times. Hall announced his pending retirement at the end of March and enjoyed a farewell tour over the second half of the season. It’s almost guaranteed that Ramsey was his recommendation to succeed him after grooming him over the last several years.

Ramsey was a captain at Florida State from 2009 to 2012 under the legendary Mike Martin and is a member of the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame. As an outfielder, Ramsey won the 2012 ACC Player of the Year Award and graduated with a degree in finance before being drafted in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Since joining Georgia Tech in his hometown and taking over the hitting coach duties, the Yellow Jackets lead the ACC in most offensive categories including average, OPS, and doubles. They’ve been NCAA Regional participants in five of the six seasons that he’s served under Coach Hall.

Prior to Georgia Tech, Ramsey served as a volunteer assistant at Florida State for the fall of 2018 before making his way back home to Atlanta.

Promoting James Ramsey allows the Yellow Jackets a smooth transition as they look to build on a massively successful 2025 season that saw Georgia Tech win the ACC Regular Season Championship. The lineup, which was recruited by Ramsey, will likely return eight of their nine starters with only shortstop Kyle Lodise expected to depart due to the MLB Draft. Four sophomores, which includes superstar Drew Burress, and four freshmen, including ACC Freshman of the Year Alex Hernandez, should see Georgia Tech’s offense continue to dominate under Ramsey.

Pitching Coach Matt Taylor and Director of Pitching Jason Richman– should they be retained– have made major improvements to a pitching staff that had previously struggled over the past decade. They will likely return staff ace Tate McKee and All ACC Freshman Connor Chicoli, while key arms Brady Jones, Jaylen Paden, Kayden Campbell, and Caden Spivey all have eligibility left and could return should they not be selected in July’s MLB Draft.

While it’s certainly the end of an era, Georgia Tech is set up for a seamless transition that should keep them competitive for years to come. James Ramsey has been one of the game’s brightest young coaching talents for several years and he’s learned under the tutelage of Mike Martin and Danny Hall. Hall reached Omaha in his first year with the Jackets in 1994. Don’t be surprised if Ramsey is able to achieve a similar feat in his first season in 2026.
