Five Series Flying Under the Radar

As the SEC/ACC/PAC-12 and Big 9 get all the headlines this weekend, let’s look at some under the radar games from teams who are still good:

1. Southern Miss vs. Texas State

These are two power teams from the second tier in the South, the two best teams in the Sun Belt, and two teams who can swing it. This series will go a long way in deciding who wins the Sun Belt and if Southern Miss wants to host, this is a game they need. Look for Alex Gonzales to continue his hot bat as Texas State looks to make it 2 in a row against ranked teams.

2. Liberty vs. FGCU

Man, do the Flames love to play good mid majors. FGCU is the hot and trendy team this year, after taking 2 of 3 from Florida State. FGCU has yet to lose a series and look to return to the dance. The Flames, on the other hand, are sliding the other way. They are still a tough team, so look for them to play hard. This is a huge RPI game for both teams.

3. UConn vs. SDSU

I love a good cross-country matchup. At 9-4, the record does not look amazing on paper, but dig deeper and you’ll find that UConn hasn't lost a series and has played some real competition in Cal and Ohio State. UConn is also raking in those airline miles with trips to Florida, Hawaii and California for a second time. SDSU is 4-3 in their last seven games after starting 0-5. Look for Uconn to dominate but jet lag is real and this is the Huskies last road series before an 8 game homestand.

4. Rutgers vs. Mercer

This is the battle of the disappointment of the Big 10 and a sneaky good Mercer team. Rutgers should win on paper, but I’m picking the Bears to pull the upset. Eric Toth is a hot bat who should give the Scarlet Knights trouble. Both teams have the offense for this to get crazy. Look for double digit runs in all 3 games.

5. North Dakota State vs. Houston Christian

Ohh the memes… A 1-16 vs 1-15, someone is doubling their previous win count! The Bison look to win their first one on their Texas road trip, as they’re currently 0-5 with losses to Texas State and Texas. HCU is led by Lance Berkman and is on the struggle bus.
