There are some surprising faces on the mound in the Big 12 just a week into the college baseball season. There’s the likes of Baylor’s Ethan Calder, who’s done nothing but pitch lights out in his first two appearances for the Bears.
Calder has worked 12 innings allowing only four hits and a run scored while producing and impressing 15/1 K/BB ratio during that time.
He also has an outstanding ERA of 0.75.
Then there’s Cincinnati’s relief pitcher Joel Pineiro who in the Bearcats 6-0 win over UNLV worked three innings not allowing a hit or a run while walking only one and fanning four.
Kansas State also has two pitchers making noise this season. Notably having a coming out party against Arkansas the other day. Jacob Frost and Blake Dean combined for a nine inning, seven hit outing which saw them allow two runs with two walks and 11 K to help secure the 3–2 upset win over the Razorbacks.
Here is their lines from that win:
Frost — 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K
Dean — 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
But there’s one name that fans need to remember and that is Utah’s Colter McAnelly who had a career night against San Diego State.
McAnelly worked seven strong innings where he did not allow a single run on four hits and walked one while striking a season and career high ten.
On the season McAnelly has worked 13 complete innings allowing only one run to score off of six hits. He’s also allowed two free passes with 14 strikeouts.
His 14 strikeouts are third best in the Big 12 this season.
McAnelly’s best outing last season came back on April 1 where he went five innings allowing a run to score off of three hits. In that game against Utah Valley he had eight strikeouts.
Those eight strikeouts were his most last season.
He finished with a season total of 45 strikeouts on 51 innings of work last season for Utah.
