Cambria Classic Primer

The Cambria Classic is set to return to US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN this weekend. The home of the Minnesota Vikings has played host to University of Minnesota baseball for a handful of seasons as the club mitigates freezing northern temperatures in the early months of each season.

The Cambria Classic presents with an unclear history, at times taking years off due to the challenge of competing in an NFL-owned stadium. The Cambria name first became attached to the event in 2020 after US Bank Stadium previously hosted a Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. Regardless, the event has hosted big programs and names you may not expect to see play closer to Canada than Mexico, especially in the month of March.

The Cambria Classic was last held in 2023 when Ole Miss, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Maryland dueled in the Twin Cities. Since then, the Gophers have navigated struggles with US Bank Stadium renovations and scheduling obligations, making the event a rare jewel. The rarity of this event isn’t going away, despite its return in 2026. The event is not expected to be held in 2027 or 2028, though conditions may change, even with the NCAA Wrestling Tournament calling dibs on the venue in ‘28.

This season, the event features the hometown host Minnesota alongside fellow Big Ten representative Northwestern. Additionally, Summit League flavors Omaha and South Dakota State make fairly short trips to US Bank Stadium this weekend. Finally, the event is rounded out by the Salukis from Southern Illinois and west-coast sprinkle UNLV.

Minnesota (9-3)

The Gophers welcome their opponents to the Land of 1000 Lakes following a hot start to the 2026 campaign. In Ty McDevitt’s second season at the helm, Minnesota dons a 9-3 record with notable victories over Northeastern and Kansas. The Gophers have played their last six contests at home at US Bank Stadium, netting a 4-2 record with victories over the Jayhawks and Milwaukee.

2025 marked a mixed bag of success and growth for McDevitt’s club as the Gophers finished the season with a 24-28 record in the skipper’s first season as Head Coach. McDevitt has spent his entire career in Minnesota, though, playing for the Gophers before working his way up on staff under the legendary John Anderson.

With positive momentum and a roster taking the shape of their second-year Head Coach, the Gophers aim to compete in the upper half of the Big Ten and work their way toward reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.

Weber Neels leads the way for Minnesota, hitting .400 and providing years of experience behind the dish. Neels and Charlie Sutherland lead the Gophers in home runs this season (five), with Easton Richter slugging four on the young season. Minnesota isn’t just a threat in leaving the yard. The Gophers stole 34 bases through their first 11 games, good for 15th in the country.

On the mound, Ben Gregory, Cole Selvig, Marcus Kruzan, and Isaac Morton have proven to be reliable starters for McDevitt in 2026. Each has recorded over 12 punchouts on the season, with Selvig leading the way with 18. In relief, the Gophers aren’t afraid to utilize a number of arms, with 13 pitchers logging relief innings. The staff does well in limiting the long ball and collectively records a 9.9 K/9.

Northwestern (5-5)

The Wildcats travel to Minnesota looking to erase a three-game losing skid. Northwestern was swept in Atlanta by Georgia Tech. Despite being thwarted by one of the nation’s best teams, Head Coach Ben Greenspan’s club had notched five wins in a row against Cornell and Boston College after taking the third game of their opening weekend series at Rice.

The Wildcats open the Cambria Classic with South Dakota State on Friday and will aim to build on Greenspan’s first two seasons in Evanston. After taking over a program that recorded 10 wins during the 2023 season, Greenspan made headway, winning 18 games in his first season in 2024. In 2025, the Wildcats tallied 25 victories, going 13-17 in Big Ten play. As conference play looms, Northwestern will aim to collect momentum ahead of a challenging league schedule featuring USC and a trip to Oregon later this month.

Offensively, NW has been led by junior outfielder Jackson Freeman. The California native has become a consistent force in the Wildcat lineup in his three years with the program. In 2026, Freeman has tallied 19 base hits en route to hitting .442 with an OPS of 1.221. Freeman is supported by Biola (D2) transfer Noah Ruiz and his .382 average and 14 RBI.

On the mound, Sam Hiboki has earned the ball on Fridays to start the season. The right-hander began his career at Vanderbilt in 2020 before transferring to Northwestern in 2025. Hiboki led the Wildcats in innings pitched last season, though he dons a 15.19 ERA after running into the likes of Drew Burress and Georgia Tech. Ryan Weaver and Garrett Shearer round out the Wildcat rotation, with Weaver leading the staff in strikeouts as well as innings pitched.

Omaha (4-7)

The Mavericks will take on Southern Illinois in their first appearance in the Cambria Classic before challenging Big Ten teams Northwestern and Minnesota to close the weekend. Their matchups against the Wildcats and Gophers will mark the second and third matchups with Big Ten teams this season after Omaha fell to Nebraska earlier in the week.

Led by Evan Porter in his ninth season as Head Coach, the Mavs prepared a challenging non-conference schedule to open up the 2026 season. The club opened the year in Arizona, dueling the ASU Sun Devils and defeating Arizona. The Mavs collected two wins over Western Michigan in San Diego before struggling against Wichita State and Nebraska, marking a recent 1-4 stretch for the team.

Offensively, 2025 Summit League Player of the Year Henry Zipay’s slow start offers signs of promise for a club with some utility. Jackson Trout and his .419 average lead the Summit League. The Papillion, NE native started 50 games for the Mavs in 2025, netting him All-Conference First-Team honors. Behind Trout, Kansas transfer Chase Diggins dons a .318 average, totaling 14 base hits. Diggins came up big in the Mavs victory over Arizona earlier this season. Tyler Bishop leads the Mavericks in RBI, while Nick Riggs and Cardel Dick have taken advantage of opportunities when Porter turns their way.

The Mavs also don the lowest ERA in the Summit League ahead of conference play. Sophomore Tanner Foertsch has struck out 10 in 12.2 innings of work. Maddox Meyer quickly worked his way into the Omaha rotation after striking out 10 Arizona Wildcats in the Mavericks’ big victory in Tucson. Sam Beck rounds out a rotation looking to support a capable offense tooled by Darin Ruf and his MLB pedigree. In relief, Omaha native Nate Moquin has proven to be reliable in late-inning situations, recording three saves on the young season.

South Dakota State (4-8)

The Jackrabbits, in Head Coach John Bishop’s ninth year at the helm, enter the Cambria Classic with an opportunity to find their footing. To begin the 2026 season, SDSU has worked their way north, beginning in the state of Texas. In the Lone Star State, the Jackrabbits picked up victories over Incarnate Word and Tarleton State after getting swept by an excellent UTSA team. Working their way north, the Jackrabbits took one of three contests at Central Arkansas before dropping a midweek contest at Nebraska.

The Summit League is no stranger to tough non-conference slates. Last season, SDSU posted a 16-36 record, going 4-18 against out-of-conference foes. Bishop and company will look to buck recent history for a program that hasn’t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2013. With teams like Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and Creighton still ahead on the non-conference front, the Jackrabbits will add to their challenging slate this weekend when they take on Northwestern, Minnesota, and Southern Illinois.

Offensively, the Jackrabbits boast three hitters with plus-.300 averages in the form of Carter Taylor, Owen Siegert, and Nolan Grawe. Taylor, a freshman from Montana, leads the club in base hits, total bases, average, and OPS. Dayton Franke and Nate Wachter pace the team in RBI. Franke has proven to be a big bat, clubbing eight homers last season in just 65 at-bats.

Ty Madison, Sam Schlect, and Sam Novotny round out the Jackrabbit weekend rotation tooled by Pitching Coach Michael Newstrom. Pacing the club in innings, the trio has combined for 29 strikeouts over 38 innings, with Schlect leading the charge with 15 punchouts. Still, facing quality competition, starting pitching has faced its share of peril this season. Friday night starter Madison holds a 12.34 ERA after running into a talented UTSA offense and giving up four runs to both Tarleton State and Central Arkansas. The senior from Omaha led the Jackrabbits in appearances after primarily pitching out of the bullpen last season.

Freshman Logan Campbell has served as a frequent flyer out of the SDSU bullpen, having appeared in seven of the Jackrabbits’ 12 games this season. Sophomore Tristan Augedahl has proven to be an effective option out of the bullpen in his two seasons in Brookings. The 6’8 southpaw is tied for the team lead in strikeouts in 2026.

Southern Illinois (4-7)

The Salukis will arrive at US Bank Stadium on the back of a streaky season thus far. Southern Illinois picked up their first win of the 2026 campaign on Opening Day against Oral Roberts. The Salukis did not win their second game until two weeks later, in a victory over Seton Hall. SIU-Carbondale, as they appear in advertisements for the Cambria Classic, took two of three from those Seton Hall Pirates before defeating North Dakota State in their final pre-Cambria Classic tune-up.

Head Coach Lance Rhodes has led the Salukis for six seasons as he aims to take Southern Illinois to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990. SIU made waves in 2021, starting the season 14-0 and donning a high RPI throughout the season. Northwestern and Minnesota serve as the only Power 4 teams on the SIU schedule in 2026, though the Missouri Valley has produced recent postseason darlings in Evansville (2024) and Murray State (2025), marking the league as one to monitor for potential postseason chaos.

At the plate, Henry Kufa has delivered when given opportunities. Kufa appears to have snagged a starting role after beginning the season on the bench. In his five starts, Kufa has base hits in four games, recording multi-hit outings in two of them. Leading the Salukis in hits, North Central Missouri transfer Julio Guerrero has started every game for Rhodes and company. The 5’11 junior comes as a threat on the basepaths, swiping 10 bases on the year, tallying three on Opening Day against Oral Roberts. Tim Simay and Cecil Lofton join Guerrero in everyday service in the lineup. Simay, a redshirt senior, began his career at Ole Miss.

On the bump, Kansas State transfer Andrew Evans has received the Friday nod for the Salukis thus far. Evans has recorded 19 strikeouts over 18 innings on the mound, including a career-high nine punchouts against Queens. Troy Shepard has accepted the ball on Saturdays while SIU has taken a bullpen-game approach to Sunday outings thus far. Jack Macintosh, Tyson Greene, and Dawson Hargrove have proven to be reliable options in the bullpen, each recording at least four appearances early this season.

UNLV (10-4)

The Rebels travel the greatest distance to Minneapolis, leaving the Pacific Time Zone for the first time this season. UNLV will not travel east of Colorado for the remainder of the regular season.

UNLV, under Head Coach Stan Stolte, began the year with a series split against Austin Peay prior to rattling off seven victories in a row against Bradley, Western Michigan, and Santa Clara. Prior to crossing into the Central Time Zone, the Rebs split a midweek matchup with Northern Colorado.

UNLV last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2014, and Stolte aims to build on last season’s 31-23 record. The roster looks different for Stolte and company in 2026, though. The Rebels welcomed the 40th-ranked transfer portal class, bringing 17 new faces to Las Vegas.

Western Kentucky transfer Drew Barragan has made an immediate impact in the UNLV lineup, producing a .471 average via 24 base hits, four home runs, and 26 RBI. The redshirt senior is second in the country in RBI, trailing only Oklahoma State’s Kollin Ritchie (26). Cal State Fullerton transfer Marcos Rosales has tallied 20 hits in his own right, including seven doubles. The junior has swiped four bases and has recorded a hit in all but one game this season.

Hawaii transfer Jack Salmon, Chaffey College product Jayden Sanchez, and Florida Atlantic import Ayden Garcia join the aforementioned duo in hitting over .300 this season. Reggie Bussey and Gunnar Myro have also slugged the ball well when given opportunities in a loaded UNLV lineup.

Carson Lane presents as the crown jewel of the UNLV pitching staff and one of the best arms that will take the field at US Bank Stadium this weekend. Lane, a 6’3 right-hander from California, was named to the All-Mountain West First Team in 2025. The junior has struck out 15 in 12.1 innings this season. The young season hasn’t been completely smooth sailing for the talented arm, as he’ll carry an ERA over 8 into his outing against the hometown Gophers on Friday.

Parker Dillhoff throws behind Lane in the rotation. The lefty tallied 10 strikeouts against Bradley and leads the team in punchouts thus far. Jase Evangelista has provided effective relief out of the bullpen in his six appearances in 2026. Fellow relievers Tate Foxson and LJ Manning have logged five appearances, recording 15 strikeouts this season. The staff’s 11.6 K/9 ranks 20th in the country.
